VR1 Prints uses PLA, PLA+, and PETG for industrial 3D printing, from functional prototypes to jigs and fixtures. Silk PLA and other specialty filaments available on request. Material properties, applications, and pricing.

What Materials Does VR1 Prints Use for Industrial Applications? A Complete Guide

Not all 3D printing filaments are the same. If you're looking for industrial-grade 3D printing in Hyderabad, for functional prototypes, jigs and fixtures, custom tooling, or production-grade parts, the material you choose matters more than the printer itself.

At VR1 Prints in Kowkoor, Secunderabad, we stock four primary materials, each with specific strengths for different industrial applications. Here's exactly what we use, when we use it, and why.

Our Material Lineup

PLA+, Our Workhorse Material (₹2/g)

PLA+ (Polylactic Acid Plus) is an enhanced version of standard PLA. It's stronger, tougher, and has better layer adhesion than regular PLA, while keeping all the eco-friendly and odourless benefits of a plant-based plastic.

Industrial applications:

  • Functional prototypes and proof-of-concept models
  • Jigs and fixtures for manual assembly work
  • Enclosures for electronics and IoT devices
  • Custom brackets, mounts, and structural spacers
  • Visual prototypes for design review

Key properties:

  • Tensile strength: ~50 MPa (comparable to ABS)
  • Heat deflection: ~60°C
  • Impact resistance: Moderate (better than regular PLA, less than PETG)
  • Surface finish: Matte, sandable, paintable
  • Layer adhesion: Excellent at 210–220°C print temperature

Why Hyderabad businesses choose it: PLA+ prints crisply on our FDM printer with minimal warping. For most functional prototyping requests we receive from local engineers, designers, and makers, PLA+ is the right choice.

PETG, The Tough, Outdoor-Ready Option (₹2.5/g)

PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) is the same family of plastic used in water bottles, but in filament form, it's significantly tougher and more durable than PLA+.

Industrial applications:

  • Functional parts exposed to sunlight or heat
  • Outdoor enclosures and weather-resistant housings
  • Jigs that need to withstand repeated use
  • Food-contact prototypes (food-safe material, with a food-safe coating recommended)
  • Car and automotive components
  • Chemical-resistant lab equipment

Key properties:

  • Tensile strength: ~53 MPa
  • Heat deflection: ~80°C (handles Hyderabad summers much better)
  • Impact resistance: High (doesn't shatter like PLA)
  • UV resistance: Good (won't degrade in sunlight for years)
  • Chemical resistance: Resists weak acids, alcohols, and oils
  • Food safety: Food-safe at the material level; printed layer lines can trap bacteria

When we recommend PETG over PLA+: If your part will sit on a sunny balcony, inside a car dashboard, or anywhere that sees temperatures above 50°C, PETG is the safer choice. We also recommend it for parts that take repeated mechanical stress, like a clamp that gets opened and closed dozens of times a day.

Silk/Metallic PLA, Premium Finish, Available on Request (₹3/g)

Silk PLA is a specially formulated filament that produces a glossy, metallic sheen straight off the printer. No sanding, no painting, it comes out looking like polished metal. We don't stock it as standard, but we can source it for your order within 2–3 working days. If you need that premium silk finish, just let us know.

Ideal for:

  • Client presentation prototypes
  • Trade show display models
  • Premium product mockups
  • Award trophies and commemorative pieces

Key properties:

  • Tensile strength: ~45 MPa (slightly less than PLA+)
  • Heat deflection: ~55°C
  • Surface finish: High-gloss, silk/metallic shine
  • Lead time: 2–3 working days for sourcing + print time

Available colours on request: Gold silk, silver, rose gold, copper, bronze.

Standard PLA, Entry-Level & Eco-Friendly (₹1.5/g)

Our standard PLA is 100% plant-based, compostable under industrial conditions, and produces zero toxic fumes during printing.

Industrial applications:

  • Low-cost prototyping (multiple design iterations)
  • Disposable jigs and one-time-use fixtures
  • Visual mockups where strength isn't critical
  • Concept models for internal review

Key properties:

  • Tensile strength: ~40 MPa
  • Heat deflection: ~55°C
  • Impact resistance: Low to moderate (can be brittle)
  • Eco-friendly: Made from corn starch, not petroleum

Functional Applications We Handle

Here are typical functional applications we print for engineers and makers:

Functional Prototypes

Engineers send us STL files of product concepts, from custom IoT sensor housings to mechanical linkages. We print them in PLA+ or PETG for functional testing to validate fit, assembly, and tolerances before committing to expensive tooling.

Typical cost: ₹500–₹3,000 depending on size and complexity.

Jigs & Fixtures

Workshops use custom assembly jigs, simple plastic guides that hold parts in the correct position during manual assembly. These are printed in PETG for durability, often as single-piece runs.

Typical cost: ₹300–₹1,500 per jig.

Custom Enclosures

Electronics engineers and IoT startups need custom boxes for their PCB assemblies. We print enclosures with precise cutouts for buttons, LEDs, sensors, and cable connectors.

Typical cost: ₹400–₹2,000 depending on size and complexity.

Replacement & Repair Parts

When a machine part breaks and the OEM doesn't stock spares, we reverse-engineer and print a replacement. These are always printed in PETG or PLA+ depending on the application.

Typical cost: ₹200–₹1,500 per part.

FAQ

Q: Can you print with ABS or Nylon?

A: We currently print with PLA, PLA+, and PETG on our FDM printer. ABS requires an enclosed printer with a heated chamber and produces harmful fumes, so we don't offer it. Nylon, polycarbonate, and other engineering-grade filaments require all-metal hotends and enclosures we don't have yet. If there's enough demand, we'll add these capabilities. For now, PETG covers most of the same use cases.

Q: What's the dimensional accuracy of your prints?

A: Our FDM printer is calibrated to ±0.2mm tolerance on flat surfaces and ±0.1mm on the X-Y axes. For most functional prototyping and jig applications, this is well within acceptable range. If you need tighter tolerances, we can adjust print settings.

Q: Do you offer rush orders for industrial prototypes?

A: Yes. Standard turnaround is 2–4 working days. Express orders are available at 1.5x standard pricing, exact timing depends on current queue capacity, so message us on WhatsApp to confirm. Local pickup in Kowkoor is available.

Q: Can you print large parts?

A: Our build volume is 256 × 256 × 256 mm. For parts larger than that, we split the model into sections and join them post-print. We've printed multi-part assemblies larger than the build volume this way.

Q: Do you offer bulk pricing for multiple identical parts?

A: Yes. For quantities of 10+ identical parts we offer discounted pricing, since we can optimise the print layout to reduce per-piece time and material waste. Send us the part and the quantity and we will work the rate out with you.

Q: What file formats do you accept for industrial prints?

A: We accept STL, OBJ, 3MF, STEP (.step/.stp), SolidWorks (.sldprt), Fusion 360 (.f3d), and IGES files. For engineering drawings without a 3D model, we can model from PDF or hand sketches.
